PCR stands for Polymerase Chain Reaction. It is a test that has been specifically designed to detect the presence of the genetic material of the COVID-19 virus (SARS-CoV-2). Genetic material of the virus will only be detected if the individual is actively infected with the virus. The test is sensitive enough to detect the virus at the very early stages of an infection and towards the end. The test does this by detecting viral RNA (ribonucleic acid) which is present in the body before the onset of symptoms or antibodies. The PCR testis the Gold Standard for determining which individuals are infected and those that are not.

It is possible that residual genetic material (RNA) of the virus causing COVID-19 can still be detected by PCR tests for up to 90 days after injection.

Due to the sensitivity of PCR tests, there is a very small chance the test result could be returned as unclear. If a test result is unclear it is not possible to say if the person being tested had the virus at the time of testing and a retest is required.

All unclear and positive results are confirmed by a second and extraction and PCR.

Your coronavirus (COVID-19) test result is negative. You did not have the virus when the test was done.

You are not required to quarantine or take a day 8 test if you are travelling from a country not on the red list and meet the requirements of being an ‘eligible’ traveller.

If you are travelling from a country not on the red list and are not an ‘eligible’ traveller, if you took the test on or before day 2 of your quarantine period, you must continue to quarantine until you have completed the 10-day quarantine period and received a negative result for a test taken on day 8. If you took the test on day 8, you may stop quarantining when you have completed your 10-day quarantine period.
